The Set Up phase is as its name suggests being the point in the stoke where you set up the paddle ready for the catch. In order to develop a good set up you must master the following points:

  • During your previous stroke you must have good rotation with the leading hand finishing across the center line of the bow. In fact due to rotation your hand will be past the boat altogether.
  • You must first transition your back and front hand into the set up position without having the blade entering the water. This allows the boat to continue to run. As soon as your paddle enters your boat will reduce speed dramatically. If your not set up before the blade enters the water your likely shortening your stroke and limiting the effectiveness of rotation.
  • The back hand must transition from the Recovery position to the set up position where you get the 3x 90 degree bends; 1) at the elbow, 2) at the armpit, 3) your side and the water (no hunching). Only then do you initiate entry in a spearing motion.
  • The length of stroke needs to be maximised without leaning forward. The length should be well past your feet at this point. The angle will be around 45 degrees from the water. Your bottom hand will be almost straight but elbow must not be locked.
  • The spearing movement needs to be completed without loosing your rotation. Your bottom hand controls the movement with your top hand and elbow following.
  • Do not have your top hand/paddle vertical at this phase i.e. do not rush the top hand forward unnecessarily.
  • The leg drive from the previous stoke needs to start to release during this phase.
