The Power phase is the time where you utilise your muscles to leaver your boat past your paddle.
- Rotation, rotation, rotation. Your back need to start your power phase facing the bank on the side your stroke is on. A paddlers core strength directly affects a paddlers ability to perform good/strong rotation.
- Leg drive is a key element to rotation as it releases the hip to allow you greater rotation and also balances your weight.
- Both arms should be straight without locking the elbow.
- Your leg (same side as blade in the water), shoulders, hands all move at the same speed. This maintains “the block” in which in turn allows you to generate and maintain peak power utilising the big muscles of the core, upper back, chest, and legs.
- When you can no longer maintain a vertical blade (your bottom arm has to start to bend), you need to start your Exit/Recovery phase.
- The Power phase occurs in the region between your feet and knee, travelling along the wash line.
- Top hand needs to maintain downward pressure on the shaft so the the blade remains locked into the water.
