The Exit/Recovery occurs when you can no longer maintain a vertical blade.

  • You must maintain constant pressure on the footplate with leg drive.
  • The blade slides out of water sideways initiated by lifting of the bottom hand. “Knuckles out and up”.
  • Bottom hand must remain in front of hips.
  • Exit must occur quickly to ensure that the boat has a chance to run – no wasted effort from the previous power phase. To achieve this, both blades must be out of the water for a period of time.
  • Once the blade leaves the water you need to relax the muscles (expect the driving leg). This includes relaxing the grip on the paddle on both sides. This frees up your muscles ready to fire during the next catch/power phase.
  • There appears to be a slight pause during the recovery/set up phases. This is the transition between the recovery phase and the set up phase.
